Every year we venture to Hilton Head for our family vacation with Jay's sister and parents. Jay's dad's company participates in an industry conference each year, and we are able to tag along and turn it into a long weekend at the beach! His dad's company sponsors a hospitality room, also known as "The Candy Room," as a "thank you" to the companies that support his business, too.
We woke up BRIGHT AND EARLY on Friday morning at FIVE A.M. and left Atlanta. We were hoping that Tuttle would fall back asleep in the car if we left early, but he didn't. Luckily, he was not fussy and watched Elmo almost the entire time on a portable DVD player that I borrowed from my mom.
We drove without stopping and arrived in Hilton Head at about 11:30 and headed straight to our favorite little restaurant, Captain Woody's. Jay and I are HUGE raw oyster fans, so it is traditional to pig out on these yummy treats every year. Tuttle filled up on saltine crackers even though we ordered him chicken fingers and fries. We definitely started the trip off right with raw oysters, crab legs, and he crab soup. :)
The rest of the day was spent checking in, catching up with friends and family, and eating dinner at the hotel restaurant.
Our family usually cannot sit still and just relax on vacations, and this year proved no different. Jay signed up to compete in his first ever Triathlon our first morning at the beach!!! The race included a 500 meter swim in the ocean, a 6 mile bike ride, and a 5k run. This triathlon was actually a sprint triathlon, and Jay thought this would be a perfect introduction for him into this kind of competition.
Tuttle and I surprised him at the starting line to cheer him on!
What a goof!!
Jay said the swim portion was the most difficult. I can believe it! He also has not really swam in several years. The ocean was a little choppy that day, so it added to the difficulty, too.
He survived! Several people gave up during the swim.
The bike portion was the easiest for Jay although it was hard to go against the wind.

The 5k run was last, and Jay is a great running, but a combination of the exhaustion from the swimming/biking, transitioning from pedaling to running, and the wind working against him made this part very hard.
Jay's finishing time was 1 hour and 14 minutes! We are so proud of his time and for completing his first triathlon! Go, Daddy!! :)
